Week 5: Un-cone-ventional

Bumsan Organic Milk Bar

I generally not a fan of ice cream cones. Like why would I spend a few dollars more for a (wrongfully) glorified ice cream holder? Especially when it’s messier than a plain old cup?

But then I saw a picture of Bumsan’s ice cream cones (please see above). They just looked so beautiful that I decided I had to give the cones one last chance to impress.

Here goes Bumsan Organic Milk Bar.

Flavor 1: The Popular Choice

For my first flavor, I tried the True Milk ice cream (their original flavor) with a Rice Krispy cone and rainbow sprinkles on top.

First off, I love how fun this ice cream looks! With rainbow sprinkles and Rice Krispies, this colorful treat is exactly why I like ice cream so much; it brings me back to my childhood.

The true milk ice cream was a very creamy milk flavor. Admittedly, it was quite simple, but the crunchy sprinkles and the chewy cone added more diversity in the taste and texture. Nothing incredibly unique, but a very solid ice cream overall.

Surprisingly, the cone was my favorite part! I know I said earlier that I didn’t like the glorified ice cream holder, but I change my mind. I would literally come back just to buy this cone.

Flavor 2: A Unique Option

The second ice cream I tried was the Chocolate and French Latté swirl with a blue-rimmed cone and Oreo crumbs sprinkled on top.

If you’ve read any of my other posts (like Roll on Up, in which I try the Ferrero Rocher flavor), you know that I LOVE chocolate. So it should come as no surprise that I loved this ice cream flavor!

The creamy chocolate paired nicely with the French Latté flavor, which had a strong coffee taste. With the chocolate Oreo crumbs sprinkled beautifully over it, and a nice punch of color with the blue-rimmed cone, I would rate this ice cream as an absolute win!

The Experience

The shop exterior looked super cute, with a bright pink color that popped against the rest of Koreatown. Unfortunately, inside the shop was another story.

The place was very cramped, and they attempted to make it look bigger with huge windows on one side. But as there didn’t seem to be any air conditioning, this made the shop swelteringly hot… which in a way, did make me crave more ice cream. So props to them, I guess.

My one other disappointment with the shop was with the price of the ice cream. A regular cone (like the blue-rimmed one) is $5.95, and the cereal cones (like the Rice Krispy) is an additional $2.95. Compared to other ice cream shops in Los Angeles, it did not give much ice cream for the price. You did get a free topping with it though, so that was kind of cool.

Final Thoughts

The best part about this ice cream shop is its Instagram aesthetic. The shop was cute and the ice cream was beautiful! Probably my favorite appearance-wise so far.

The ice cream was also pretty yummy, but it was so expensive for the amount that you got that I was a little disappointed. Additionally, the place was subpar, just because it was so hot inside that little shop.

But it did make me change my mind on ice cream cones… they are more than just for holding the ice cream. If done right (like at Bumsan), it adds to the experience!

  2. These are very Instagram-able! I really appreciate that you commented on that aspect because I do feel like there are a lot of food, drink and sweets places in LA that really pride themselves on the Instagram-ability over the actual taste. These do look really good though. What is milk flavor? Was it vanilla or did it actually just take like frozen milk?
