Week 2: Roll on Up!

Holy Roly Ice Cream

Rolled ice cream? Fun flavors? A plethora of toppings? Of course I had to try the amazing Holy Roly Ice Cream!!

This cute little shop in Koreatown has all the potential of the perfect ice cream experience – let’s see if it holds up.

Flavor 1 – The Popular Choice

The first flavor I tried was Strawberry Graham.

Okay, I know it may look messy from this photograph. But like all beautiful things, the true allure just couldn’t be captured on my iPhone camera.

To paint the picture – strawberry ice cream was artistically rolled into delicious pink cylinders, then topped with crunchy graham crackers, sweet strawberries, whipped cream, and a toasted marshmallow. Yes, I know. Wow.

And it was delicious! I’m not usually a fan of strawberry ice cream, but I was pleasantly surprised by this flavor’s freshness. I was also concerned that I wouldn’t enjoy the texture of rolled ice cream. However, there is something incredibly satisfying about biting into an ice cream roll that I can’t explain – you just have to try it!

Downside: the excessive toppings. Overall, it didn’t add much flavor.

Flavor 2 – A Unique Option

As a chocoholic, my second choice was obviously Ferrero Rocher.

This – THIS was the stuff… chocolate ice cream, chocolate chips, almonds, whipped cream, Nutella, and a marshmallow on top. Each topping added a new level of complexity to the ice cream – which I admit was a bit average if considered alone.

The top view captures the beauty well. Neat ice cream rolls, scattered almonds and chocolate chips, sweet Nutella drizzled on top, and a heart made of chocolate. And the Ferrero Rocher chocolates were combined into the ice cream rolls!! I mean, seriously, what more could you ask for?

The Experience

Although located in the L.A. staple Koreatown, the shop was directly surrounded by a somewhat sketchy area. And there was no parking. Thankfully valet was only three dollars, but I like to avoid giving my car keys to strangers.

The shop itself was cute and pink-themed, and the workers there make the ice cream right in front of you. However, it was expensive at $9.50 for a special rolled ice cream (ex. Ferrero Rocher) or $6.50-$8.50 for regular rolled ice cream flavors (ex. Strawberry Graham), depending on the size. But in fairness, you do get a lot of ice cream.

Final Thoughts

It was delicious! Location could have been better, but hey – at the end of the day, I’m coming for the ice cream.

Compared to Midori Matcha Café (which you can read about here), this shop has the slight edge in terms of the ice cream experience. Midori Matcha serves as a great ice cream stop when sight-seeing Little Tokyo. But if you purely want good ice cream, you’re coming to Holy Roly.

Still, I think there’s a shop that will have both a great location and great dessert… stay tuned for next week!

  2. I love reading your blog and look forward to all the ice creams you are going to review. Your rubric is really detailed and helps me a lot especially because I really care about originality and texture. I also like that you included location in your rubric as it is important to many people, including me, who wouldn’t want to travel too far for the perfect scoop!

  3. This blog is actually kind of fun in a very good way. I love the topic of the blog and your writing style is very enthusiastic which makes me want to come back to read your next blog. I might actually come by and try this place myself, but you are right I’m not sold on the price quite yet. Quite frankly because of the price and the sketchy parking I personally would rate a 3.75 scoop review, but that’s just me. I can’t wait for you next review!
