Week 6: Coco-Nuts about Cocobella!

Cocobella Creamery

So guys… I have a confession. This is hard to admit, but I would be deceiving you all if I did not tell you my secret – I am… lactose intolerant.

Now I know what you’re thinking. Why have I chosen to put myself through consuming ice cream each and every week? Couldn’t I have chosen a theme for my blog that didn’t cause intense pain? Okay honestly, yes, but I love ice cream so much that I have decided it’s worth all of the stomach cramps.

However, a commenter on last week’s blog asked if I had any vegan ice cream shops on the itinerary. And it made me realize: ice cream should be for everybody to happily enjoy, no matter their food preferences (and without physical suffering).

So, this week, I visited an ice cream shop for all of the vegan, lactose intolerant, and gluten intolerant readers – Cocobella Creamery.

Flavor 1 – The Popular Choice

I was informed by the very kind worker that the most popular flavor is probably Cookie Monsta, which is made with a coconut milk base.

Please disregard the tan-colored scoop on top – I saved money by getting both scoops in one cup, so I will be talking about the second flavor in a bit.

First off, I love the pretty blue color! It definitely reminds me of Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster, which I assume is what the flavor is named after.

The taste definitely surprised me! I had prepared to lower my expectations given that the ice cream did not contain any dairy, but I honestly could not tell the difference from non-vegan ice cream. It was very creamy and sweet with a cookies-and-cream-like taste, and the texture was perfectly soft. My only note was that I would have liked a bit more crunch in the cookie crumbles. Overall though, a very solid ice cream.

Flavor 2 – A Unique Option

Now let’s get to the beautifully tan-colored flavor on top – the Coconut Caramel Macchiato.

This flavor also has a coconut milk base, but while eating it, I totally forgot it didn’t contain any dairy!

The ice cream had a strong coffee flavor, with a hint of coconut. Mixed into the scoop were ribbons of sticky caramel, which burst with sweetness in your mouth. The coffee, coconut, and caramel all worked so well together that I believe it’s my favorite coffee-flavored ice cream so far, beating out Honeymee’s Honey Affogato and Bumsan’s French Latté flavors. Truly spectacular.

The Experience

With the colorful paintings on the shop walls, the classic flavors, and a happy-go-lucky worker at the counter, Cocobella Creamery brings customers back to the very reason they fell in love with ice cream in the first place – it’s a fun, delicious treat! (Although, for a somewhat expensive price – $7.25 for two large scoops.)

Cocobella Creamery is also located a bit outside the heart of Hollywood, which makes the shop a nice opportunity to go sight-see. However, it isn’t right in the thick of the action (probably a few minute drive to see the Hollywood Walk of Fame).

Final Thoughts

Cocobella Creamery definitely has the best shop experience out of all of the places I have visited so far. Although other shops opt for a modern-looking style, this place embraced a whimsical theme, which I very much appreciated. It also had yummy ice cream, especially given its vegan and gluten-free menu.

As I sat eating my Cookie Monsta ice cream at the primary-color-themed tables, I felt like a child again (in the greatest way). I had been having a kind of bad day, but the positive vibes of this shop completely lifted my spirits up… I witnessed the true power of ice cream!!

Whether you are vegan, lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, or without any restrictions at all, Cocobella Creamery provides good quality ice cream that everyone can enjoy.

  1. Wow, I think I will DEFINITELY need to try this one, it seems like your favorite one yet! As someone who personally cannot digest lactose (no matter how much I want to) I will definitely be checking this place out. I usually go for Salt and Straw’s vegan flavors or I just pop a couple of Lactaid and hope it goes well, but this is now next on my list! I love how you describe the vibe of the place with a sort of ice cream personality.

  2. Awesome post! That ice cream looks really yummy. I feel the struggles of being lactose intolerant, as I am, as well. But, I also love the taste of ice cream, so this place seems like a great alternative. As far as this post, I thoroughly enjoyed the visuals and overall presentation of this blog, it looks like a professional food page. I am definitely looking forward to where your ice cream ventures lead you next time!
